Plot

Angel's Egg follows the days of a young girl in a surreal world of darkness and shadows made.
The little girl, that you do not ever say your name, brings a mysterious egg. She spends her time collecting bottles and filling them with water in a ghost town, sinister and gothic. A man, also unnamed, arrived in this city on his shoulders carrying a weapon which looks like a cross, the two meet and begin to talk among themselves, even if the dialogues are sporadic and unaccountable, often consisting in one question: "Who are you? ".
Meanwhile, in the city, appear ominous shadows of the fish seem to swim through the buildings, the many statues of human appearance at the place come alive and chase these shadows, trying in vain to catch them.
Inside the cave in which the girl takes refuge, a place which, in addition to its collection of bulbs, including many unusual fossils, the man tells a story similar to that of Noah's Ark, then when the child is asleep, subtracts the egg and break it. On awakening his reaction is despair and anguish; decides to chase the man and during the course falls into an abyss of water and drowns. The bubbles created underwater by his vain attempt to breathe creates a lot of eggs, which go back up, coming out from the surface.

Angel's Egg is a highly symbolic film, full of religious metaphors and surrealism, a custom for the films directed by Oshii. At first glance may seem incomprehensible and too complex, the meanings are not easy to find and metaphorical key scenes, which cover the whole film, are ostiche to interpret. The only certain intuition that you can have is that there are many Christian messages. I have never been issued official interpretations or by Oshii, or by others involved in creating this movie; But on the other hand I know a site where a theologian really interesting interpretations of the proposed azzeccattissime-and, dare I say. " The site is: http://blogs.teodesian.net/wp/?p=117

Below I will give a brief summary in Italian of some of the concepts that the webmaster of the site explains.

The egg of the child

first interpretation: the egg symbolizes innocence. It 's something that she tries to protect and to which he clings, but finally be removed.
second interpretation: the egg is the "spiritual seed" rooted in the human spirit through the gospel. When the man with the cross - Jesus Christ will break the egg "inciting" the soul of the girl, she will follow. It will be at that point that she, the bearer of the seed, the fruit will give life to as many times as they want-the birth of many eggs from his breath while drowning. "

large eggs

Every so often in film you can see the large eggs containing chicks curled up on themselves, not yet born. This would a metaphor to represent the spirit awaiting the realization of his true form in the 'afterlife.

The man with the cross

The man who talks to the child is Christ: the gun-shaped cross bandages on his hands and symbols are strongly linked to his image.

first interpretation: the figure is shown in a negative, because the first says to the girl that will protect and instead eventually steals the egg from her beloved. For some this is the disappointment of Oshii for Christianity
second interpretation tion : the figure is shown in a positive light because the girl driving in a hostile world and breaking his egg, which is the Gospel, actually helps to overcome the selfish tendencies and express the true potential of teaching Christian. The need to begin to destroy something bigger is a central theme of Christianity.

The fisherman and the fish

first interpretation: the fisherman and the fish are recurring symbols in Christian mythology.
second interpretation: I believe this interpretation is rather fine, and I liked it particularly. The shadows that "swim" along the buildings belong to the coelacanth, the fish become extinct. The shadows represent a "sign" left by something that once lived, but then disappeared from the set, thus becoming extinct. To make a spiritual metaphor, shadows can be demonic and what is ephemeral. This concept adapts particularly well then if we add that even the demons are considered to be fallen angels. The anthropomorphic statues that come to life and vain attempt to harpoon the fish are the shadows of the human soul that tries to cling only to things ephemeral, and failed.

These, as mentioned above, are some of the concepts from the site. I invite you to visit it, it's really worth having the high quality of the analysis.

Who Should

I'll be a bit 'repetitive, but I highly recommend it to those who seek insight and surrealism. Add that it is a film that absolutely must be seen even by those who are believers or simply is passionate about theology, because it offers a myriad of interesting ideas about the messages that Christianity offers.

Thanks

Shin thank for helping me in a part of the synthesis and in the search for some information about the shadows of the fish. I also thank the genius behind this interpretation: without him I would not have understood almost nothing, as we all think.
